- Welcome to the Reps Corner!
As we start a new year, we are all beginning to make plans for our Midyear meetings in Charlotte, North Carolina and our long range plans for the next ICES convention in San Diego, California. For me as your Rep. Liaison, that also included the appointment of a Representative Moderator to fill the position which I must release. It is important to appoint an individual who:
- is knowledgeable in parliamentary procedures;
- is knowledgeable as to the bylaws and business of ICES;
- carries themself well and can maintain proper and necessary authority during meetings; and
- is a "visible" member of ICES and one that our representatives will be comfortable with and respect.
Based on all of this information, and having a clear understanding of the needs of our representatives in their meetings, I am pleased to announce the appointment of B. Keith Ryder as Representative Moderator for the 2009-2010 term. Keith is an informed and known ICES member and will be an efficient Chair and advisor for the Representative Midyear and Convention meetings; and he will be joined by your Representative Secretary, Bonnie Blackburn, who will continue to serve you in her most efficient manner.
As Representatives, you will all be planning your Winter/Spring area or Chapter Meetings/Days of Sharing. Be sure to stay in contact with each other or with your Reps Committee for suggestions and ideas. For those of you who will be holding officer elections, be sure to contact members of your Representative Committee for any information or assistance you will need.

Dear Representatives,
With the deadline for registering for Midyear fast approaching, I hope you are finalizing your plans to attend. The Midyear Meeting offers a unique opportunity to network with other Reps and compare notes as to what works well, and the ideas that did not produce the desired results. In a way, you could consider Midyear as a concentrated DOS for Reps.
Have you given any thought to serving on the Board of Directors? It requires a dedicated amount of time to attend to the business side of ICES, and since it is not a paid position, could result in a financial commitment as well. As a Rep, you receive a token reimbursement for travel expenses (we do realize, of course, that it does not cover everything). Board members receive a similar amount. As you know, our organization is made up of volunteers, and this is just one more important role that must be filled by competent members. If you have served as a Treasurer in another organization, your skills are needed. Do you have secretarial training? Are you a whiz at organizing? Are you a “people person”? Do you have other business training? We need you.
There will be an orientation meeting at Midyear for those of you who are interested in running for the Board. This meeting will be on Thursday, March 11, 2010 from 4:00 to 5:00 in the President’s Suite. I have asked Elizabeth McMillan-Dickson, a past President to conduct this session. Please mark your calendar and call me when you arrive so that I can give you the room number.
I will be hosting an informal gathering on Thursday, March 11, 2010 at 8:00 p.m. in the President’s Suite. I hope you will make plans to attend. Everyone is invited to relax and enjoy snacks and fellowship with the Board, Show Directors, and other Representatives. It will be a relaxing start to what we all hope will be an enjoyable and productive Midyear Meeting.
See you in Carolina!
Sincerely,
Glenda
